The thesis of this research is “When paying attention to certain features such as‘comfort, rest, and peace’ in specific texts, one will be guided to understand Luther's view of sanctification from the moral level toward the faith relationship between God and
human, and find a proper position for good works in sanctification.” In other words, understanding Luther's view of sanctification begins with textual analysis, grasping his
focus on the heart and regarding faith as the keyword to interpret the view of sanctification. In this way, one could depart from the stereotypical definition of sanctification nowadays and rediscover Luther's original intention of the Reformation.
This research focuses on three of Luther's major works according to each narrative context, sorting them out through the two kinds of “Two Kinds of Holiness” proposed by scholars and thereby arguing for the three “solas” in “Solus Spiritus, Sola
Verbum and Sola Fidei” of Luther's view of sanctification.
By doing so, it affirms Luther's view of sanctification as being entirely passive and points out that the heart is sanctified by receiving “comfort, rest, and peace” through God's work with the aid of Small and Large Catechisms. The study afterwards supplements the transformation of the worshipping heart under the sacred framework with “doubt, tranquillity, and faith” and delineates faith as the cause and purpose of good works. The next part uses the three “solas” to develop the composite of the divine-human relationship, arguing that the essence of sanctification lies in an exclusive faith relationship between the persons of host and guest. The final part discusses how comfort, rest, and peace maintain this relationship holy, accompanied by an icon which depicts the triune God inviting His people to sit at His table daily and hourly when pointing out potential directions of further research.
